Artist Statement
David Rose is a low-vision artist working and living in Beaconsfield, Quebec. He paints primarily with acrylics on canvas or masonite board, as well as working with mixed media and drawing on paper.
“To compensate for impaired eyesight, I utilize visual aids such as digital photography, various magnifiers, and a closed circuit television viewer when creating my artworks. Using my own photographs as source material, I compose paintings by cropping and collaging various elements, forms and details from enlarged images. The compositions are then unified by light, colour, technique and ideas”.
“What interests me at present are subjects within my immediate vicinity and experience, such as local landmarks, activities and daily life. I make pictures that record specific places and narratives, yet try and extend the content to transcend mere representation, so to convey moods, feelings and concepts.”
Biography
David Rose was born in Toronto, Canada. He studied commercial art at the Ontario College of Art, and drawing, painting and printmaking at The New School of Art with painter / teachers Dennis Burton, Robert Markle, and John MacGregor. After receiving a diploma in Fine Arts from St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario, David moved to Montreal, Quebec, to study art history at Concordia University. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Art History in 1986, and a Master’s in Canadian Art History in 1993.
From 1989 – 2005, David worked as an archivist and architectural historian at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, and wrote on architecture, art and cultural exhibitions for the Montreal Gazette. Although he began experiencing visual problems in the mid-1980s, and is now legally blind, he began painting again in 2003.
David Rose is a member of the Beaconsfield Artist’s Association. He has exhibited and sold paintings in many solo and group exhibitions in and around Montreal.
