 Catching the Light
Artist Statement
My latest paintings explore new ways to express the beauty of our forests and grasslands. I have seen my work evolve from realism to an increasingly abstract and interpretative approach. I try to make my work fresh and contemporary yet remain firmly tied to Canadian artistic heritage. I have worked hard to develop a unique, instantly recognizable style that viewers have described as both aesthetically pleasing and spiritually uplifting.
My large format , acrylic paintings are designed to elicit a personal response from each observer. I try not to paint 'scenes', but instead to create a mood or memory, a vignette, that enables everyone to recall the beautiful, yet familiar, landscapes that surround them personally. Composition is vitally important to me, as are colour and pattern. My paintings can be seen as more than landscapes and enter into the realm of the highly abstract, appealing to a larger audience and I hope increasing their impact. I strongly believe in extending the colour palette beyond the true spectrum to achieve a higher aesthetic response.
Biography
I grew up in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia and also in France. I started painting after retiring from teaching elementary school in Victoria, British Columbia.
