Artist Statement
from Science comes Art
Images of the sub-cellular buried in the subconscious resurfacing into the vibrant colour of the macro world
Biography
Growing up in a mid-1950's blue-collared family, I was encouraged to select a career which would provide a guaranteed income rather than working in the arts. This attitude led me to the visual sciences of medical-haematology technology and of electron microscopy in scientific research. However, I continued with evening courses, at local schools and colleges, and showed my work at weekend art shows. Over time, my desire to draw and paint outgrew my interest in scientific research. In 1993, I began study visual arts at York university because York's mandate emphasizes creativity. This mandate encouraged me to explore another aspect of my art, abstraction. Early retirement allowed me to pursure my art, in the abstract and in realism, from my home-based studio near Lake on the Mountain, Ontario, Canada.
