Interview with Artist

With pen and ink Neil Borrell produces finely detailed country and nautical scenes that are rich in texture and character. His drawings have been published in The New Yorker, and the Martha's Vineyard Gazette and have been displayed at the Swansborough Gallery in Wellfleet, MA. The Wellfleet Historical Society carries his drawing of their Museum in the Cape Cod town that has inspired much of his work.

In New York, Borrell’s drawings were the subject of a one man show, "Fishing Ports in Pen & Ink", at the South Street Seaport Museum, and another at Barnes and Noble. His work has also been featured in exhibits at Lincoln Center, The Hudson Guild, Bank Street College and the Educational Alliance.

Borrell’s pursuit of subjects has taken him to France, Spain, Portugal, England and Wales, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod.

An exception to the fishing ports and rural villages that characterize most of Borrell’s work, Paris remains his favorite locale, perhaps because his artistic career began in earnest there in the spring of 1969. An elaborate wooden door across the boulevard from his hotel cafe inspired a drawing that he shared with his friends and family as a Christmas card. Borrell’s work has grown in complexity and discipline since then. He is currently working in a large, multi-frame format, presenting an enlarged interior view of his work.
