 The Anatomy of Melancholy
“For more than two thousand years, melancholy has been recognized as the intellectual source of all great creations in European painting and sculpture”. So said the curator of a recent Paris exhibition of 300 masterpieces of painting and sculpture titled: 'Melancholy - Genius and Madness in Art'
Figurative sculpture can be a mirror of reality. In this series, I’ve tried to turn away from beautiful forms and toward a world of internalized melancholic reflection. These small sculptures start with the more realistic, morph toward stylized images, and then evolve into the abstract. In this progression, I am trying to move the sculpture away from the familiar toward something more precarious and evocative; toward an intimate parallel world.
