Island Dreaming

Hawai'i is really her people. Aloha is an action word and actually means so much more than what commercialezed luau would lead you to believe.

My friend who sits on the beach is a person who whispers with the fragrance of the Islands in each breath. I actually met her when I moved back to the mainland.

Having been in radio for years, many of my friends were in the entertainment business. When I was getting ready to move back to the mainland, I was given a list of names that I was told I 'must' call. I was warned that the culture chock would be difficult as I blended back into the 'haole' life. Though I discounteed my friend's words, I found it to be true. Had I changed so much after almost ten years in the Ilsands? On my return, I didn't feel like I really related well to people...it was as though I were from another planet!

It didn't take me long to pick up the phone, looking for the 'island' connection'. One of the numbers was this woman sitting on the beach. Her California home was a bastion of Hawai'i. Their home was a plantation of life growing everywhere and my friend was the one who held it all together with her countenance of elegance and grace.

Though she lives on the mainland, her heart is always filled with Aloha for everyone who walks through her door. In the midst of carting kids to school, supporting her beloved and helping the elders, she always seemed to still be sitting on the beach, soaking in the peace and tranquility that permeates all of the Hawaiian Islands.

She taught me that the Ilsands are something that you carry with you no matter where you are.
