Teach A Man To Fish And He'll Eat A Tree
A statement about conpicuous consumption. This image was something that my husband Jeff had visualized while meditating. I took the image on as my own reflecting upon my recent viewing of a Magritte exhibit in Los Angeles and a lecture by Alan Watts. I have mixed my puns with this one. Using a Buddhist concept that when we are being --as men or women for instance-- we are "man- ing" or "woman-ing." Rather like when a fish is simply being a fish, it is fishing. Add to that the idea of teach a man to fish and somehow he becomes a rainbow trout. But really what have we done by teaching men to fish? We have shown them how to use their hands so that they may create technology or tools to help themselves. But to what end? To consume more resources? To eat trees? |
