Artist Statement

"Many of my paintings depict the American Country Scene. Though I've been influenced by the realist tradition, I choose light sources, shadows and compositions that express my particular feelings for nature"

"Leonard Kings paintings are about the land and reflect his love of nature and animals. He excels in capturing the nuances of the land and shows great sensitivity in depicting animals, running the gamut from longhorn cattle in pastoral settings to foxhounds in full cry.

The countryside around King's home in Chester County Pennsylvania, with it's rolling hills and long established farms, is an endless source of inspiration for his paintings.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he studied and worked with S. George Phillips, a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy and a member of "The New Hope School". Mr. Phillips influenced both Kings's handling of the oil medium and his interest in landscapes.

King was also influenced by the Barbizon painters, especially Camille Corot, Charles Daubigny and Theodore Rousseau. Like these painters, he uses a limited pallette - primarily earth colors: rich browns, ochres, amber, roan and terra cotta. His adroitness in handling these colors and his sparing use of bright hues lends a feeling of quiet repose to his work. He is particularily attentive to perspective, composition, and the use of light and shadow creating highly original and intimate paintings.

In his first group exhibition, King was in the company of John Fernely, Thomas Sidney Cooper and Rosa Bonheur. He and Jamie Wyeth were the only living artists included.

King's work has been reviewed favorably by The Washington Post and appeared on the cover of Carnegie Museum Magazine. Many of his paintings are in private collections in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Leonard King is continuing the heritage of many American artists whose paintings are a celebration of the environment, the animals and the land."
