Divine Passion - Mixed Media

Artist Statement

My current art is based on my life experiences. It is how I have healed, kept my heart, spirit, and mind open after years of negative changes. The real change in my life has been in my spiritual life and healing. My experience of Divine love and acceptance of all of myself has led me to deeply love myself. I have chosen to live with my heart wide open to whoever or whatever comes. All these changes are reflected in my art in the past 9 years.

My motif for the past 9 years has been the symbolic heart. My motif and art have gone through a transformation, as has my life: from an armored heart, then a broken heart, to a healing, spiritual, loving heart.

I create my art in many mediums. In the past 9 years my main focus has been Mixed Media, using layers of coloured tissue wrap, ink, oil pastel, photographs, fabric and feathers etc. I have also been creating Acrylic painting, oil pastel drawings and limited edition prints, mainly mono prints and lino block prints.

In the past 7 1/2 years I have also been writing poetry. It was a complete surprise that I could write poetry, since my first attempt at poetry began in a mandatory writing class at Simon Fraser University. It has become an exciting new outlet for my creativity. My poetry has inspired some of my art and some of my art has inspired my poetry. I also find other poets and artists also inspire me to create new work.

Biography

I was born in Toronto. I knew at a young age I had to be an artist, since I doodled instead of studied. I had to follow my first love and passion, Art, by going to Ontario College of Art, where I also met my husband, Steve.

In 1993 my husband, my cat Nya and I moved to Vancouver where I continued my art and my studies by going to Simon Fraser University. In my last year at SFU I wrote my first poem, unexpectedly starting my second creative career, as a poet.

Since 2002, after taking a poetry and art workshop, and after my divorce and subsequent life breakdown I had both the encouragement and the subject matter to begin writing my poetry. Luckily my recent poems are more upbeat, about my new love, healing, self love, nature and spirituality.

In the last 31/2 years I've joined the Avenue for/des Arts, a non-profit visual art group in existence for 20 years in Vancouver. We create free community workshops, do community projects and exhibit together. I have been in 4 art exhibitions with the group.

In 2009 I curated and organized the Tempestuous Words & Lush Images exhibition. A collaborative show of poets (from the Poetry Slam, and Pandora's Collective) and artists (from Avenue for/des Arts and guest artists), creating new poetry and art from each other.

I continue to create and show my art in both solo and group art exhibitions in Vancouver and in Toronto. In the past year I have been going through an artistic transition. I'm in the process of changing my media, my motif and my theme in my Art. Where it will lead me I don't know!

I also have been reading my poetry in Vancouver since 2004, reading at the Poetry Slam at Cafe Deux Soleils, also at Thundering Word at Montmartre Cafe, at Twisted Poets and at Literary Festivals. In February 2009 I also read at 4 Open Mics. in Toronto, including the Art Bar and the Toronto Poetry Slam.

2009 has been a great year for me, for the first time my Poetry is in print! I have an untitled desire Poem published in the Anthology "say forty!""stick 'em up shorty" June 2009 by Pooka Press. I also have my "Winter Sun" Poem published in the Poets and Painters Anthology by the South Delta Artists Guild in October 2009.

I love to teach Art especially Collage and Painting to adults, something I haven't been able to do for years. I have finally gone back to it this past year, 2009, teaching a 6 week "Collage and Mixed Media" course and a 1/2 day workshop on "Exhibiting your Art: tips and tools for New Artists" for the Vancouver School Board in Fall.

I am also scheduled to teach both the "Collage..." course (Jan 20 - Feb 24) and the 1/2 day workshop "Exhibiting Your Art" (Feb 20) again starting Winter 2010 and again in the Spring.
