Artist Statement
Based on photographs taken during rehearsals of Ballet British Columbia, these works reflect two of the oldest artistic explorations of humanity: painting and dance.
From time immemorial the first humans left their traces in painted images on cave walls. They swayed and danced in rhythm around the fire, connecting visual marks with the movements of their bodies, the first manifestations of art, expressing the sacred, the new born human spirituality.
These works combine those two creative human endeavours, by incorporating the dance within the paintings.
Biography
Vancouver artist Pnina Granirer completed her studies at the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, Israel and has lived in Canada since 1965. She lived in Paris for extended periods and worked at the lithography shop of Clot, Bramsen & Georges.
Exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, Granirer's works are found in numerous public and private collections in Canada, the U.S., Europe, Israel and Peru. While living periodically in Paris, Granirer showed in group exhibitions at the Canadian Cultural Centre, the Grand Palais, the Canadian Embassy and had solo shows in Strasbourg, France.
Her prize winning limited edition book THE TRIALS OF EVE was published in December 1989 and was launched in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland and a film of the same name and based on the book was produced by Gretchen Jordan-Bastow and premiered in February 1990 at the Pacific Cinematheque in Vancouver.
A 40 years retrospective of her work was mounted at the Richmond Art Gallery in January 1998 and a book by Ted Lindberg on her life and work, PNINA GRANIRER: Portrait of an Artist (Ronsdale Press) was published at the same time. Profiles on her were recently seen on the International TV5 and Radio Canada’s ZIGZAG! Arts & Culture television.
A new film, PNINA GRANIRER: Portrait of an Artist was released on BRAVO! TV in January
2005 and shown again in July .
Shows
In September 2004 Pnina Granirer travelled to Prague to be part of an artists' exchange with the Czech Republic. She was artist in residence at the Charles University and then exhibited her work at the centuries old Prague City Hall, in the heart of the Old City.
