Artist Statement
My current approach to the painting surface is to build up texture with modeling paste and gel, emphasizing the contrast between surfaces found in nature, especially rocks and their reflections in water. When I bring out the images I see, the results are frequently representational, sometimes leaning toward realistic, and sometimes more freely expressive. Landscapes and waterscapes are inspired by my imagination, by my travels, or by the view from my studio! Capturing the play of light on the surfaces gives me great satisfaction.
Biography
Joan Meade has been a painter for most of her life, starting in oils, and discovering acrylics in the 1970's. She studied art while pursuing an architecture degree at Cornell University in upstate New York, and continued her art education at Colorado College. Her first exhibitions were in Tunis, Tunisia and Washington, DC when she was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the 1960's. She later exhibited in Ohio and West Virginia, prior to settling in the Chapel Hill area of North Carolina in 1978. After retiring from her architectural career in 2001, she fulfilled her dream to become a full time professional artist. She has exhibited widely in the Southeast, has served on several art juries, and is co-curator of a local exhibition space. Her works are in private collections in many states of the US from Florida to Michigan, and also in Ireland.
