ProofSheetCreator v1.0 (first release)

Instructions - Non PRO Version

The Template File

Before you can create the proof sheets, you must first create a template file (of the desired size--4x6, 5x7, or 8x10) and save it in JPeg format. Two sample templates have been included in the installation (4x6 400 DPI). The output proof sheet files use the DPI of the template file and I recommend using at least 300 DPI for output. Using photoshop, or any image editing software, create your template file at the size you want your proofs to be.

ProofSheetCreator will automatically compensate mismatched template dimensions with output size, but I recommend making the template the exact size of output proofs you want. When labs process images that are not the proper dimensions, they will fit the image by centering it on paper size and crop the image. ProofSheetCreator takes this into consideration and ensures the proofs will print in the available printing area after any cropping at the lab takes place.

You can put anything you want on the template... your name, company logo, graphics, etc. You can use any color for the background. ProofSheetCreator will superimpose the proof image on top of the template.

Selecting the Template to Use

After loading the ProofSheetCreator program, the first step in creating your output files is selecting the template you want to use as your background image. click on the "..." button in the "Template File" section to browse to where your template JPeg file is stored and select it. Two sample template files are included in the installation.

ProofSheetCreator will then determine the Output Dimensions of your template file and the "Output DPI" of the template file based on the Output Dimensions.

Output Dimensions

You can change the output size of your proofs by selecting one of the three options that show here: 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10. The final output DPI will change and reflect the new output size for the prints. If the template dimensions do not exactly match the proportions of the output size, a border will be placed around the actual printing area of your output file after the lab has cropped the image file to fit on the print. The border will appear in the image area on the screen, but will not be rendered onto the final output image.

Output DPI

This number reflects the DPI of the final proof sheet files based on the output dimension selected. It is not user selectable.

Compression

This sets the compression quality of the output JPeg files. You can use the dropdown selector, or slide the bar under it to change the output compression quality. "80%" is the default value and I have found it to be acceptable for most projects. "50%" will give you the smallest output file size, and "100%" will give you no compression and the highest output file size. I have found that digital prints usually result in better quality with a slight amount of compression. Slight compression usually reduces graininess and imperfections of your source proof images.

Placement

Select the number of proofs images per page and thier positions by clicking on one of the 5 options below:

1 per page:Automatically fit a single proof image onto the template background.
2 up:Place 2 proof images vertically on the page.
3 up:Place 3 proofs vertically on the page.
2 across:Fit 2 proofs horizontally.
3 across:Fit 3 proofs horizontally.

Margins

You define the page margins and the space between images by using these options.

To make things easy for those of us who think of measurements in normal fractional values, you can enter in the margin values as fractions of an inch,(1/4", etc) or by the decimal value (0.25).

The reason you would want to have margins is if your template had your logo on the bottom of the page, you would need a bottom margin to ensure the proof pictures don't get overlayed over your logo or other graphics located on your template image.

Overylay Filenames

When printing proof sheets for clients so they can pick which prints they want to have enlarged or printed, it definately helps to have some form of ID associated with each proof image. By checking the ENABLE option here ProofSheetCreator will show the JPEG filename (without the .JPG extension) under each photo.

Select the point size of the text by using the drop down selector and choose the color of the text by clicking on the color box and selecting the desired color from the color chooser window that appears.

Folder To Process

You are now ready to select the proof image files you want to process. Press the "..." button to pick the folder the JPEG files are located in. After selecting the folder all the *.jpg images in that folder will load into the file list box.

(The output folder will also get set to same folder if the output folder is currently empty.)

NOTE: In Windows XP, the path of the files shows the REAL path, not just "my documents\my images", but you can select the folder using the standard XP folder names.)

Files To Process

Select the files you want to process by highlighting them in the file listing box. You can select all of the files by hitting the SELECT ALL button. Use the standard window's selecting keys to select individual or multiple files. (shift click, and control click).

You can click LOAD FILES to reload the files from the folder specified above in "Folder to Process".

Output Folder

The Output Folder is the folder that you want the output proof images to be created in. By default, the output folder is set to the same folder as the proof images. If the output folder does not exist, it will automatically be created for you at the time of processing.

Output Filename

Type in the "prefix" you will use to name the output files. Do not include the .jpg extension. The output files will automatically be numbered by putting a hyphen and a number following the filename you specify. The number is automatically sequenced starting with 001.

If you process proof files in a folder where the filename already exists with the same name, you can optionally "continue" the sequence of proof files. You will be prompted if this occurs and can either continue the sequence, or overwrite the existing files in the folder.

Options:

Group Similar Oriented Images:

Automatically group the images by orientation. All the portrait images will be placed on the proof sheets first, and then the landscape images after.

Use Numbering (not Filename):

If you have "Overlay Filenames" enabled and want to show proof ID numbers instead of the JPeg filenames, check this box. This is especially usefull when you don't have consistant filenames, or are printing them grouped by orientation and the proofs will no longer be printed in sorted order.

"Show Overlay" and "Refresh Overlay" Buttons

The Show Overlay button is used to superimpose boxes on the template image to show where the proof images will appear. The Refresh Overlay button is used to update the superimposed boxes after making a change to the Margins or Font information.

START Button

Once everything is entered and you are ready to start creating the proof output files, press the START button. The start button becomes a CANCEL button to let you abort the process. If you press the CANCEL button the processing will abort after it has completed processing the current proof image.

Registration

Unregistered software is fully functional but will put an X over the proof images. This allows you to fully test and be satisfied with the program before purchasing it.

ProofSheetCreator registration is $30.00 (US) and you will be licenced to use the software on only one computer per registration. Each installation is serialized and requires a KEY for registration. After receiving payment I will send you the registration KEY via email. You need to provide me with the serial number and your PayPal account name will be the name you are registering the software under.

Registration information is located in the HELP menu on the top of the window.
